If you are considering replumbing your home or if you have a new structure in the works, consider using PEX piping for the water lines. PEX is an economical alternative to traditional copper water lines
One of the main advantages of using PEX for water lines is ease of installation. With the flexibility of PEX, there are fewer connections to make, saving both time and material costs. Also, with fewer connections there is less chance of leakage, saving on costly repairs. PEX piping is also a great alternative in areas where frozen pipes are a problem. Because of its ability to expand and contract, PEX piping has a measure of resistance to bursting. Also, PEX has an ability to be zoned off so should repairs be necessary, the area can be easily shut down, making repair easier. PEX is compatible with copper, cast iron and PVC piping making it an excellent choice in remodeling projects also.
Unlike metal piping, PEX does not corrode so your drinking water does not have that metallic taste.
There are a few drawbacks to PEX, the main one is that it cannot be used outdoors.
Of course, the list of advantages of using PEX in your plumbing project outweighs any disadvantage PEX might have.
Hiring a Contractor
When hiring a contractor to do your potable water system in PEX, look for one with experience in running PEX piping. A PEX system needs to be balanced properly for pressure and water flow. An experienced contractor can take your water from the source to anywhere in the house with little or no drop in pressure. An experienced contractor can make a determination as to where existing piping should remain and to where it can be replaced with PEX. An experienced contractor can save in both time and cost of materials.
